Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has successfully undergone surgery on his ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is not expected to return to action until November at the earliest, according to Sky Sports News.

Bentancur went down injured after winning a tackle in the middle of the pitch,  turning his knee awkwardly during a challenge during the second half of the 4-1 at Leicester City earlier this month.

After the match, assistant manager Cristian Stellini initially told the official Spurs site that was he optimistic about Bentancur’s injury, however, any hope was dashed with further news on the severity of the injury.

The Uruguayan was left in agony on the pitch of the King Power Stadium, with a stretcher brought out for him, but he managed to get back on his feet and then limped back around the pitch, to be replaced by Pape Matar Sarr.

The 25-year-old had put Spurs ahead in the match in the first half, only for a poor team performance to see the Foxes dominate the match afterwards.

Bentancur, who has been a revelation since joining the north Londoners from Juventus in January of last year will not not only miss the rest of the campaign, but also the first few months of the 23/24 season.

This is heartbreaking news for the midfielder, who will have to be patient and even when he returns, may take a good few months to get back to his old self given the severity of the injury which he has suffered.

Pape Matar Sarr and Oliver Skipp performed admirably in the first leg against AC Milan and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s return for the West Ham match was a welcome boost.

Tottenham’s injury timing could not have been worse planned with Yves Bissouma also out for a number of weeks having undergone surgery on an ankle fracture.

The club’s hierarchy will have to decide in the summer whether they will need to bring in an extra body into midfield while Bentancur recovers, or continue to place faith in the younger players.
