Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Pape Matar Sarr can play a variety of roles for Spurs, and often covers multiple in a single game.
After a long 10-day wait between games, Tottenham Hotspur are back in action against Chelsea on Monday evening in North London.
By the time the Lilywhites kick-off, they could be as low as fourth in the table, despite heading into the weekend two points clear at the summit of the Premier League.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have just 12 points from ten games this year under new boss, Mauricio Pochettino, who is coming under increasing pressure ahead of his return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Pape Matar Sarr covers every blade of grass for Spurs
Tottenham have had success stories all over the pitch this season, from the partnership of Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero at the back to the link-up between James Maddison and Heung-min Son up top.
However, one player who perhaps does not get as much credit as he deserves is young Pape Matar Sarr, who has made the midfield his own in North London this season.
When asked about Pape Matar Sarr and his position, Postecoglou said (Football London): “The good thing is he can play all three at once.
“With Pape when you consider his age, it is just his ability to embrace the challenge of playing in a midfield role and particularly for us it is quite multi-functional.
“He has the capacity and great strength to run and provide energy in all areas. Having him there helps because sometimes he is a six, sometimes he is an eight or a 10 or a full-back and he does that with ease, but it does require energy and a strong work ethic.
“I think as he gets more experienced he’ll refine some areas of his game. Sometimes his decision-making is a little rushed but geez, for where he’s at in his career, what’s providing for us is enormous at the moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I think Sarr has perhaps been Tottenham’s most underrated player so far this season. Having Rodrigo Bentancur back is very exciting, but people should not sleep on the influence Sarr has on that right side on and off the ball. Bentancur will need to work extremely hard to match the youngster.
