Tottenham Hotspur signed South Korean starlet Heung-Min Son from Bayer Leverkusen for around £18m almost exactly a year ago.
However, after a sub-par first season and a tumultuous transfer window, we’ve taken a look at the winger to see how he fits in post-transfer window and what he needs to do to improve ahead of a vital season for Tottenham Hotspur.
Out of 40 games played for Spurs, Heung-Min Son scored a respectable 8 goals and 1 assist, he consistently showed himself as a hard worker but too often was more of a 12th man and less of a nailed on starter.
He had some fantastic games last year but only started 13 games out of a possible 40.
With the additions of Vincent Janssen, Moussa Sissoko and Georges Kevin N’Koudou it raised questions about Son’s place in the team.
Son always seemed to give it all in Spurs matches, but fell victim sometimes to indecision or not being played enough.
In a recent press conference at the Olympics, where he was on duty with South Korea, Son came out and said that he “Doesn’t fear the competition” that new signings will place on the squad.
He has missed a chunk of pre-season due to being on international duty with South Korea but looks set to skip their upcoming World Cup qualify games in a bid to focus on his Spurs career.
The recent surprise departure of Nacer Chadli could aid him however, the Belgian was considered a favourite under Pochettino but has since signed for West Bromwich Albion.
It seems that he needs a run of games to get going, much the same way Lamela did, and has since blossomed with.
Rotation will be a big part of Mauricio Pochettino’s management faucet this coming year, so it may well allow Son to get the run of games he needs to show that he’s the real deal, it could be that he predominately plays cup matches in order to get game time.
I think he will become an important player to Spurs this year, we have great strength in depth but if you get the injury bug then we’d be very lucky to still have this man who can be a game changer on his day,
He needs to get his head down in training for now, to show that he is still the Argentine’s man, with first game impressions of Sissoko and N’Koudou yet to be realised.
