Korean forward Heung-Min Son has revealed he won’t be satisfied until he is likened to the modern day football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Spurs attacker, who’s managed 21 goals and 6 assists in all competitions this season, has cemented himself as a key figure in the Tottenham first team. This is following what was a difficult first season for the 24 year old, who only able to contribute 7 goals and 5 assists the year before.
However, in spite of this stunning progress, Son has announced that he is not prepared to start resting on his laurels. While currently on a promotional trip to Seoul alongside team-mates Kyle Walker, Ben Davies and Kevin Wimmer, Son took the time to speak to the Yonhap news agency about his determination to keep improving. He said:
“I feel like I am still young and have a lot more to learn.”
“I know my career is just beginning. After the season ended, I couldn’t get to sleep, knowing I could have played better. But overall, I learned a lot this season.”
“Unless I play like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, it’ll be hard to give myself 100 out of 100. I know I accomplished a lot this season, but I also went through some tough times. And those moments helped me grow as a player. I’d give myself maybe 70 points.”
Son broke the record for number of goals scored in one European season by a South Korean with his 21 goals, but insists that record can be broken again, so long as the whole team seeks improve in the same mould.
“I know we had a strong season, better than last year, and I think we can be even better next year,” Son added. “I haven’t won any trophy in my career, and I’d like to lift one.”
“As for the records, they are there to be broken. And I’ll try to break my own record next year.”
