Ange Postecoglou has spoken about the decision to include Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier in Tottenham Hotspur’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2023/24 season.
Postecoglou has stressed that despite Dier having not been named in any of his five competitive match day squads to date, he has never been fully out of the first-team picture in North London.
Lloris had been expected to quit the club after 11 years’ service during the close season having made his intentions clear to seek a challenge away from North London and did not make the trip for the pre-season tour to sort out his future.
Tottenham moved for Guglielmo Vicario during the summer, with the Italian having been signed as the club’s new main goalkeeper.
Postecoglou explains why Lloris and Dier are named in his Premier League squad
The captaincy was taken off the French World Cup winner ahead of the new campaign with Heung-min Son now wearing the armband instead following Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich.
Postecoglou had downplayed the chances of Lloris being included in the North Londoners’s top flight squad list if he was still at the club in September when he was asked last month (Football.London).
With Lloris having been included in the 25-man squad list for the Premier League this season, it sparked a U-turn from the Australian.
He explained to Football.London: “I think it was a fairly fluid situation. We weren’t sure what was going to happen with Hugo. Dier was never out of the squad.
“At the end of the window we saw the numbers we had and there was room for both of them. They’ve been training with the squad so they continue to be part of it.”
