According to The Sunday Mirror (13/02: page 74), Newcastle United are the favourites to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma in the summer.
Bissouma was reportedly on Tottenham’s radar in January, with Spurs alleged to be battling the likes of Man Utd and Aston Villa for the midfielder’s signature during the final few days of the window (The Daily Mail).
However, the Mali international ended up staying put at the Amex Stadium even though he only has 18 months left to run on his contract with the Seagulls (Transfermarkt).
When asked about the 25-year-old’s future, Brighton boss Graham Potter hinted earlier this month that the Seagulls might have to cash in on the midfielder to help rebuild their squad (The Daily Express).
The Mirror have now revealed that Spurs are one of three Premier League clubs interested in a deal for Bissouma in the summer along with Liverpool and Newcastle.
However, the report suggests that the Magpies are the frontrunners to snap up the Brighton star ahead of the two other clubs.
It is explained that Brighton’s technical director Dan Ashworth is on the verge of completing a move to Eddie Howe’s side and the 50-year-old could prioritise bringing Bissouma to St James’ Park.
Spurs Web Opinion
Newcastle will likely be competing for a lot of the same players as the likes of us, Arsenal and Man Utd in the summer.
While we cannot compete with the Magpies in terms of transfer fees or wages, one would think that working with Conte at Spurs would still be a more appealing prospect than a move to the North East for most players.
However, it would prove really difficult to attract the type of players we need in the summer unless we manage to get into the Champions League.
