Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith has praised the performance of Yves Bissouma in Tottenham Hotspur’s opening game of the Premier League campaign, and gave the midfielder the man of the match award.
Tottenham played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Brentford on Sunday afternoon at the Gtech Community Stadium, and Ange Postecoglou‘s first competitive game in charge of the Lilywhites offered encouraging signs for the future.
Goals from Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal earned Spurs a point in a difficult away game. Postecoglou’s side may even feel unfortunate not to have taken all three points, after dominating the second half.
Among many promising performances in the Spurs side, one player who really stood out was Yves Bissouma. The Mali international controlled the game from the central midfield position and looked far more assured than he did last season.
A £25m signing from Brighton (The Athletic), Bissouma struggled to fit into Antonio Conte’s system last term and suffered injury issues which hampered his progress.
Is Bissouma back to his best?
Bissouma’s performance against Brentford was indicative of a player full of confidence, and his display really caught the eye of Alan Smith in the commentary box.
Speaking on Sky Sports (13/08/23 at 15:57), Smith said: “I think Bissouma has been my standout player actually. I think he’s been superb as well. So, plenty of plus points for the away team.”
Bissouma was awarded the Man of the Match award by Smith and the Sky Sports team.
Spurs Web Opinion
Yves Bissouma was fantastic against Brentford and certainly looked more like the player we thought we had signed last summer.
He is clearly enjoying Ange Postecoglou’s system and appears to be much happier now. If he continues in the same vein this season, Bissouma will be a very important player for us this year.
