The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has revealed that Yves Bissouma has been the one to impress Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff the most among the players in the Tottenham squad.

Bissouma endured a disappointing first season at Tottenham, having struggled to break into the starting eleven for the first part of the campaign before missing a big chunk of the latter half of the season with an injury.

The 26-year-old never quite managed to win over Antonio Conte and struggled to showcase his qualities while operating in the Italian’s preferred two-man midfield.

The Mali international will hope to put things right this season and it has been reported by various sources over the last month that Postecoglou sees him as an important part of his midfield (Football.London).

The former Brighton man has even been given the number eight shirt vacated by Harry Winks, which is arguably a sign of his importance to the new set-up at Tottenham and he certainly caught the eye in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Yves Bissouma is fit and ready to play for Spurs

Kilpatrick revealed that Bissouma returned for pre-season training much fitter than the rest of the squad, which enabled him to catch the eye of the coaching staff.

The journalist told The Tottenham Way Podcast: “In terms of standout players, I’m going to go with Bissouma.

“He arrived with such promise and we didn’t see his best last season. It was only under Ryan Mason that he looked fit and sharp again, under Conte there was nothing.

“It feels like Postecoglou really likes him and it feels like he came back to training fitter than anyone else and he’s looked good in the pre-season games in Asia and Australia.”

While Bissouma might not be as good as Hojbjerg at reading the game and while his passing range may not be exceptional, he has much better ball retention than the Dane and can handle possession in tight areas.

He is also much better when defending counter-attacking situations owing to his physicality and burst of pace.
