Doctor Rajpal Brar has revealed that it could take Rodrigo Bentancur two years to return to his pre-injury levels of fitness after the midfielder underwent surgery on his ruptured ACL on Thursday.
Benatancur picked up the injury in the second half of Tottenham’s 4-1 loss against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium two weeks ago.
It was immediately clear that the 25-year-old was not going to kick a ball again this season and following his surgery yesterday, The Evening Standard reported that Spurs are hopeful that he will be back fit by September.
However, Sky Sports suggested yesterday that the Uruguayan is not expected to return to the football pitch until November at the earliest.
Brar has now backed up the same information, stating that it typically takes seven to nine months for elite athletes to recover from a ruptured ACL. However, more concerningly, he added that it might take 18 to 24 months for Bentancur to get back to the levels of fitness that he had pre-injury.
Surgery completed on Bentancur’s ACL rupture. Typically looking at 7-9 month return timeline for elite footballers & return to pre-injury levels around 18-24 months. #THFC #Tottenham https://t.co/98U0OeeaWf

Spurs Web Opinion
We have seen that recovery periods from ACL injuries can be quite hard to predict, which is perhaps why some varying dates have been proposed for Bentancur.
We have also seen examples of players never quite being able to return to their previous levels following an injury of this kind, which hopefully will not turn out to be the case with the 25-year-old.
