Heung-Min Son’s terrific finish saw him become the highest scoring South Korean in Premier League history as we struggled to a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace – all in front of family and friends at Wembley.
Debutant goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who only found out he was playing yesterday morning, was in inspired form and helped us keep a clean sheet at one end, while Sonny delivered at the other, smashing a 20-yarder curler past Palace ‘keeper Julian Speroni to secure a vital victory.
That goal took him beyond fellow South Korean, Park Ji-Sung, who notched up 19 Premier League goals while at Manchester United.
Speaking to the club website Sonny enthused:”Today is a very happy day for me – I scored, we won, I broke the record and my family was here, my brother, my friends, it was a special day for me,I’m just thankful for everyone supporting me”
He added “Park Ji-Sung had the record and he’s my idol. He’s a legend. He’s got everything. I’ve a lot to do to catch him.
“It’s a record which makes me happy. I can enjoy this day but I’m still hungry. I hope I can score many, many goals for Spurs.”
It was a game of two halves for Sonny as we laboured to victory against a well organised Palace team. He was a different player after the break and took his goal very well and considering the raft of injuries it was a great victory to sign of the international break to.
