Football pundit Janusz Michallik has been tasked with ranking his top five players in the Premier League right now, and Tottenham Hotspur skipper Heung-min Son has made the list.
Since the decline of Hugo Lloris and the departure of Harry Kane, the captain’s armband was handed to Heung-min Son this summer for Ange Postecoglou‘s new-look Spurs side.
The South Korean star appears to be relishing the added responsibility, too. We are seeing a more confident, vocal, and clinical Son than we saw last season, that’s for sure.
Spurs have started the season strong, and a lot of that is down to Son’s great form and his exciting connection with new signing, James Maddison.
Son has six goals already this campaign (Transfermarkt), and is well on his way to beating last season’s tally. Indeed, we could end up seeing the 31-year-old posting numbers similar to the 2021/22 campaign, when he shared the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah.
Son is one of the best in the Premier League
Funnily enough, both those players are mentioned in Michallik’s top five Premier League players, and Son’s positioning in that list may come as a surprise to some.
Michallik told ESPN: “At number three I put Heung-min Son, I love what he’s done. He’s doing what I thought he would do after that season where he finished top of the scoring charts with Salah.
“In my opinion, that year he was the best player in the Premier League. I knew he hadn’t lost it and I’m happy he’s proven me right here.”
Interestingly, Michallik had Salah at number five and Erling Haaland at fourth, both behind Son. Martin Odegaard came in second, with Rodri topping the pile.
Spurs Web Opinion
When Son is at his best he is unplayable. We’ve seen time and time again – last season and this year – that Haaland can be taken out of the game completely and contribute very little.
Whereas Son, at the very least, will work his socks off to be involved. Salah and Odegaard are great players, too, and I think I would agree with Rodri being at the top.
