Tottenham Hotspur are looking for a new centre-back this summer, and Fabrizio Romano has now revealed what the club will do once they sign one – sign another, but for a lot cheaper than their top targets are going to cost.
In a catastrophic campaign in 2022/23, Tottenham conceded 63 goals in the Premier League. Only five teams did worse than that, and three of those teams were relegated from the top flight.
It’s no wonder then, that new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has told the club’s board that he needs to sign a new centre-half this summer (90 Min).
The Lilywhites have been linked with a host of names to fill the position so far during the current transfer window.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham are closing in on the signature of Wolfsburg’s 22-year-old defender Micky van de Ven.
However, Alasdair Gold claimed on his YouTube channel that Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba would be Spurs’ preferred choice.
Spurs want another, cheaper centre-back
Whichever target Tottenham do end up acquiring this summer, once a deal is done it seems the North Londoners will go into the market again for another centre-back, only next time it will be a cheaper option.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who had this to say on Tottenham’s pursuit of Tapsoba and van de Ven in a recent edition of the Here We Go podcast: “[Spurs] are speaking with the people close to Tapsoba.
“My opinion, Tottenham will go for one of them. Then maybe sign another defender who is maybe a cheap option.
“But at the moment the priority is Micky van de Ven.
“Tapsoba remains one of the top options but he’s way more expensive.”

One new centre-back is not enough this summer, so I really hope Romano is right on this one.
It’s very likely we will sign either Tapsoba or van de Ven, and then try and strike a cheap deal for Clement Lenglet or Tosin Adarabioyo.
The latter would cost more, but he’s in the final year of his contract with Fulham so wouldn’t break the bank.
