Despite strong links to Micky van de Ven, Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham’s top target when it comes to central defenders is still Edmond Tapsoba.
Tottenham Hotspur were poor all over the pitch throughout last season, but the main cause of the club’s downfall was undoubtedly the faltering backline which conceded 63 goals last term.
Needless to say, finding a new centre-half has been earmarked as a top priority by Ange Postecoglou upon his arrival in North London (90 Min).
A slew of names have been linked to the Lilywhites already this summer, but two targets appear to be head and shoulders above the rest.
Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven is widely believed to be in contention for a move to Tottenham this summer (The Athletic), while Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba is known to be high up on the club’s shopping list (Alasdair Gold).
A previous report from Fabrizio Romano claimed Tottenham would be signing one high-value centre-half before turning their attention to a second, more moderately priced option.
Tapsoba is the top target for Tottenham
Now, the transfer expert has a new update on Spurs’ search for a centre-back, and has indicated that Edmond Tapsoba is still the number one target.
In his Caught Offside substack, Romano wrote: “The next days are going to be important for Tottenham and their pursuit of a new centre-back.
“I’m told Tapsoba remains the top target, and he has always been super appreciated. The deal depends on Bayer Leverkusen’s decision on final price tag but Spurs still want Tapsoba.
“They keep negotiating also for van de Ven because, in the end, the price is the crucial point for them when signing a new centre-back.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s understandable that Tapsoba would cost a little more than Micky van de Ven as he has that extra experience.
I think most Spurs fans would be very happy with either player joining the club, though, so hopefully we can just get a deal done soon.
