Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that there has been a ‘key breakthrough’ in Tottenham’s negotiations for Micky van de Ven, which is why there is now confidence at the North London club that they will win the race for the Wolfsburg star.
Over the past 48 hours, multiple outlets have talked up Spurs‘ chances of getting a deal for Van de Ven over the line.
The Mirror (17:55 in blog) claimed on Monday that the 22-year-old had agreed to join the Lilywhites, who are now looking to complete the ‘final details’ with Wolfsburg to seal a £30m transfer.
The Athletic subsequently claimed on Tuesday that Tottenham are ‘inching closer’ to reaching a full agreement with the Bundesliga club over Van de Ven’s transfer.
Spurs are growing in confidence over Van de Ven deal
Jones has now said that there is now growing belief that a deal for the centre-back could be sorted.
The journalist remarked while there is excitement at Spurs around the Dutchman, he is still very much a work in progress rather than the finished article.
When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Van de Ven, Jones told GiveMeSport: “As of Monday night, this deal was not quite closed, but there had been a breakthrough, and there was confidence that it soon could be sorted out.
“He’s not quite the full package yet but is described as having shades of Jan Vertonghen in his game, and because he is only 22, Tottenham have determined that they are on the verge of a deal that holds superb value.
“Spurs have had an eye on other players, like Tapsoba, and this is the critical moment to decide how to build the foundation of their team for Postecoglou.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Van de Ven has just had one season of football at the highest level and will have a steep learning curve at Tottenham if he does sign for the club.
However, we know that Postecoglou loves working with young players and the Australian might relish the opportunity to mould the 22-year-old according to the needs of his system.
