Micky van de Ven has been left extremely impressed by his centre-back partner, Cristian Romero, with the Dutchman describing his defensive teammate as a world-class player.
Tottenham had an extremely leaky defence last season, considering 63 goals over the course of the campaign, which was more than any of the other top 14 teams in the Premier League.
The club have brought in Van de Ven from Wolfsburg in a £43m deal to tighten things up from the back and the Dutchman has certainly made a solid start to his career in North London.
The 22-year-old has started alongside Cristian Romero in all three games this season but he had Davinson Sanchez as his partner for the majority of his debut against Brentford after the Argentine came off early due to a concussion.
Van de Ven played all 90 minutes with Romero against Man Utd and Bournemouth and there was certainly the makings of a decent partnership, with the pair complementing each other quite well.
Van de Ven and Romero are forging a deadly duo
The Dutchman admitted that he hopes to learn from his centre-back partner and revealed that the duo are already striking up a good relationship off the pitch.
The former Wolfsburg man told talkSPORT about his partnership with Romero before the Bournemouth game: “We played now two games together and we find really well with each other on the pitch and off the pitch, so I think that also helps when you have a good relationship with someone off the pitch.
“And of course, what you say, he’s a world-class player. He won the World Cup. I think that’s a dream of everyone, so yeah he’s a really good centre-back and I think I can learn a lot from him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Romero was extremely poor for much of last season and deserved the criticism that came his way.
However, the 25-year-old looks much better when paired with a quality centre-back partner in Van de Ven, even though it is still early days. Spurs fans will be hoping that the Argentine’s display against Manchester United is a sign of things to come this season.
