TEAMtalk have claimed that Liverpool were keen on bidding for Micky van de Ven this summer but Tottenham Hotspur moved swiftly to sign the centre-back before the Reds could act.
Van de Ven has had a brilliant start to life at Spurs, with the £43m fee that the Lilywhites paid for the Dutchman already seeming like a bargain.
The 22-year-old was linked with a move to Liverpool as well during the summer transfer window (Mirror), and it has now emerged that the Merseyside club did have a genuine interest in the player.
Van de Ven was not willing to wait for Liverpool
TEAMtalk have now asserted that the centre-back’s name was recommended to Liverpool by their recently-appointed sporting director, Jorge Schmadtke, who previously held the same role at Wolfsburg.
However, it is explained that Jurgen Klopp prioritised overhauling his midfielder department in the summer, which is why a move for Van de Ven was put on the back burner.
The report adds that the six-time Champions League winners did reach out to the centre-back’s camp and informed them that they want to make a bid.
However, it is said that once Tottenham opened talks, Van de Ven had a decision to make and he had no hesitation in pushing for a switch to N17.
Spurs Web Opinion
Among the accolades that Maddison has got, the Van de Ven signing has gone a bit under the radar.
There is an argument to be made that the Dutchman was Tottenham’s most important acquisition of the summer as the left centre-back role was the main priority to address. The early indications are that Spurs have a gem on their hands.
