Micky van de Ven has admitted that he was smiling for hours when he heard that Tottenham Hotspur had struck an agreement with Wolfsburg for his transfer.
Van de Ven was playing in the Dutch second tier for Volendam just two years ago and has had a meteoric rise since then.
The Dutchman established himself as a regular in Wolfsburg’s starting eleven just last season and before too long, his consistent displays at the back for the Bundesliga club became difficult to ignore.
Although the centre-back had also been on Liverpool’s radar (TEAMtalk), it was Spurs who decided to take a punt on him, paying £43m to prize him away from the Bundesliga club in the summer.
That is already proving to be an inspired decision as the 22-year-old has adapted seamlessly to the Premier League and has shown maturity much beyond his years so far in N17.
Van de Ven was all smiles when Spurs news dropped
Van de Ven has now opened up on how he felt when he heard in the summer that his move to Spurs was going to go through.
The centre-back said on the new ‘Driving Home With’ segment on Tottenham’s official channel: “When I got the call from my dad like, it’s a done deal, you’re so happy you can only smile for, I don’t know, 2 hours!
“Spurs is a huge club who come up to you and you always think like, wow, this a huge step. When Tottenham is calling for you, you also think, imagine this huge club wants to sign me.”

What is most impressive about Van de Ven is the calm head he has on his shoulders, which is not common for a player of his age. I was surprised by the composure he showed in the North London Derby on Sunday, which was the biggest game of his career so far.
