It is unusual for a football fan to want his club to sell one of their best players, however, that is the position I find myself in.

After watching Tottenham make it all the way to a Champions League final, I have such a strong desire to see the club kick on in this transfer window.

However, I feel that keeping Christian Eriksen would now be counter-productive. Eriksen has been a mainstay in the Spurs midfield since joining back in 2013, however, it is time to go.

The Great Dane has just a year left on his current deal, and it doesn’t look as if he will be signing a new one. It, therefore, comes down to whether Spurs sell up now or lose him on a free.

From Eriksen’s point of view, even if he doesn’t secure a move to Real Madrid, with whom he has been strongly linked this summer (Mirror), then he will still likely find a suitor next year.

Few would turn down the chance to sign Eriksen on a free in the summer of 2020.

Tottenham signed the playmaker for £11.5m from Ajax in 2013, and have had six good years with the Danish star (BBC).

Real Madrid are said to be willing to spend up to £62m on him this summer (AS), which is under what he would be worth if he had years remaining on his deal, but is still a great offer for Spurs.

This would represent a profit of over £50m on a player who has also served the club for six seasons.

This sum of money could then go directly on a younger, promising playmaker this summer, securing the position for the future at Tottenham.

For example, James Maddison is said to be worth £60m this transfer window (Mirror). I don’t want to see Spurs lose out on a big fee for the sake of one last season, especially when Eriksen has been poor for the last few months.
