Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr could be unavailable in a critical part of the 2023/24 season, with Football.London now reporting that the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has been pushed back.
The next edition of AFCON was originally scheduled to take place in June of 2023 in the Ivory Coast. However, the report reveals that due to the torrential downpour that occurs in the country during the summer months, it has now been pushed back until 2024.
Football.London explain that just like this year’s tournament, the next edition of AFCON will be played during mid-season, which means clubs will be without some of their African players during a busy part of the campaign.
Sarr was part of Senegal’s victorious squad during the 2022 edition earlier this year, and the Spurs midfielder would be expected to be involved in the next tournament.
Tottenham could also be without summer signing Yves Bissouma during the early part of 2024 if Mali qualify for the competition.

All European clubs would understandably be frustrated by this development and would want AFCON to be held during the summer months like the Euros and Copa America.
So, clubs will now have to plan ahead and potentially make an extra signing or two next summer as a precaution to cover for the players who would be unavailable for a few weeks.
