The Telegraph have revealed that Newcastle United are now closing in on a deal to sign Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer.

It has been widely reported over the last month that Spurs have their eye on Barnes, with The Daily Mail claiming last week that the Lilywhites were battling Newcastle, West Ham United and Aston Villa for the winger.

A couple of days ago, we relayed a report from The Guardian that claimed Ange Postecoglou’s men are now ‘less likely’ to make a move for the Leicester star since they had agreed a deal to sign Manor Solomon.

The publication added that the Magpies have moved into pole position to snap up the England international.

If The Telegraph’s latest update is to be believed, Barnes is now on the verge of sealing a switch to the North East.

The report claims that Newcastle have stolen a march on their rivals and hope to agree on a deal with Leicester for the winger over the next week.

It is asserted that Eddie Howe’s men are expected to submit an offer for Barnes over the next few days, with the player keen to make the switch.

The outlet adds that the Foxes value the 25-year-old at £40m but Newcastle are hoping to conclude a deal of around £35m.

Barnes is a talented player but I am pleased that we moved for Solomon instead.

The latter is more versatile and could play in either flank while the Leicester star could only be used on the left as a cover for Son.

The Israeli international is also a much more aggressive ball carrier and would thus be a more effective impact substitute than the 25-year-old.
