As the transfer window nears its close, Newcastle United have reportedly made a surprise approach to sign Hugo Lloris from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan.
In a summer of change at Tottenham, one player has continually been linked with a move away from the club and that is Hugo Lloris. After more than a decade in North London, it appears the time has come for the Frenchman to move on.
Lloris put in a string of poor performances in the 2022/23 campaign, and was even dropped towards the end of the season to be replaced by Fraser Forster.
Now, with the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario, Lloris has permanently been replaced as the number-one goalkeeper in the Spurs squad. In addition, new manager Ange Postecoglou has also named Heung-min Son as the club captain, ending Lloris’ eight-year run as the Spurs skipper.
Lloris recently had the chance to join Lazio, but turned down the offer as he wasn’t happy to be second-choice goalkeeper for the Italian side (L’Equipe).
Will Hugo Lloris join Newcastle?
Now, with very little time left to secure a suitable move away from Tottenham, it seems Premier League rivals Newcastle United could be an option for Lloris.
That’s according to a report from The Times, which claims the Magpies have made a late approach for the 36-year-old. The offer of a season-long loan has “come out of the blue,” and it is thought there would have been no fee involved in the proposed switch.
However, it is believed Lloris has “turned down” the opportunity to join the North East outfit.

Hugo Lloris turned down the chance to be Lazio’s backup goalkeeper, and he wouldn’t have been the starting goalkeeper for Newcastle either, so it’s no surprise that he has reportedly rejected the move.
It’s looking likely Lloris will stick with Tottenham until January at least, which is not ideal for anyone really.
