Robbie Savage has completely dismissed suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur could mount a title tilt this season, insisting that finishing in the top four would be a major success for Ange Postecoglou’s men.
Spurs were largely written off by pundits before the start of the season, with some even suggesting that the Lilywhites would struggle to finish in the top half of the table after losing Harry Kane in the summer (Football Insider).
However, Tottenham have been the surprise package of the Premier League season so far, sitting just a point behind league leaders Manchester City after seven games.
Spurs have also received plenty of praise for their front-foot eye-catching approach and when asked if they can muster a title challenge, Ian Wright refused the write-off Postecoglou’s men, insisting that all they have to do is to keep winning one game at a time (Premier League Productions via The Metro).
Is it too early to call Tottenham title contenders?
However, Savage believes that Tottenham have had the rub of the green so far this season, remarking that they are too vulnerable defensively to be able to challenge the likes of Manchester City.
When asked if Spurs can compete for the title this season, the former Blackburn Rovers midfielder told TEAMtalk: “No! Even though they are one of the only two undefeated Premier League sides this season – Arsenal being the others, with Man City losing their status at Wolves – I’d say it’s a no.
“Spurs under Big Ange, we all know the style of football… Let’s be honest here, Spurs fans before the start of the season, would have taken a manager who can play free-flowing, attractive, dynamic football.
“They’ve got that dynamic and exciting approach now, but there is an element of jeopardy that sees them taking risks. They look vulnerable still in defence.
“They’ve been rewarded with late goals against Liverpool [to win 2-1] late goals against Sheffield Utd [by the same scoreline] which has somewhat masked their start to the season.
“And while Spurs fans are totally, totally enjoying it, there is a slight element of luck to those wins. But what I think would represent success for Big Ange and Spurs would be a top-four finish.
“They’ve started ever so well under him, but I think reaching the final of a domestic cup competition and a top-four finish would represent a huge success considering the style of football implemented by Spurs under Big Ange.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is too early in the season to entertain any talks of a potential title challenge. There is no doubt that a top-four finish would be a brilliant achievement for Ange in his first season in charge. We can perhaps reassess our ambitions for the season once we are at the midway point.
