Sport have explained that Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur held several conversations about Giovani Lo Celso this summer but Ange Postecoglou vetoed the midfielder’s move to Camp Nou.
The report reveals that Lo Celso was ‘one of Xavi’s requests’ to the Barca hierarchy this summer, with the 43-year-old seeing the Tottenham man as someone who can make a key impact in the final third.
Postecoglou blocked Giovani Lo Celso exit
It is explained that Barca had ‘maintained contacts’ with Spurs regarding the 27-year-old, with the North London club alleged to have informed the La Liga giants earlier in the summer that they would only accept loaning the player out if the deal included a mandatory purchase option.
This is because Tottenham did not want to let a squad player like Lo Celso leave without getting anything in return.
In the end, Postecoglou allegedly informed Spurs that he is ‘counting’ on the Argentina international and wants to use him ‘in rotation’ this season.

If Barca or any other club had made a loan offer with the obligation to sign Lo Celso permanently for £20m, Spurs would have likely offloaded the midfielder and brought in a replacement.
However, no such offer appeared to arrive and the former Real Betis man was seemingly keen to stay and fight for his place in the side.
