According to Gianluca Di Marzio (as relayed by Fichajes), Atletico Madrid are now set to reignite their interest in rumoured Tottenham target Santiago Gimenez.
Gimenez has shown so far this season that his prolific form in front of goal last campaign was by no means a one-off, with the striker having scored 12 times in eight league games so far for Feyenoord this season.
90 min reported at the start of this month that scouts from Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea had travelled to the Netherlands to watch the centre-forward in action this season, adding that they had been impressed by what they had seen.
It was subsequently reported by Fichajes two weeks ago that Real Madrid were also said to enter the race for the striker, who was valued at €50m (£43m).
Atletico are now a contender for Santiago Gimenez
If Di Marzio’s latest update is to be believed, Atletico are now ready to challenge the likes of Real Madrid and Spurs for Gimenez’s signature.
The report explains that the Mexican international was identified as a key target by Diego Simeone during the summer and the Colchoneros are now ready to try once more to sign the player when the transfer window reopens in January.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham would have no trouble out-bidding Atletico for Gimenez if the North London club do hold a genuine interest in the Feyenoord star.
However, I suspect that signing a number nine might not be Postecoglou’s top priority in January, with a centre-back and a central midfielder being more pressing requirements.
