The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham saw off plenty of competition from the Premier League and Serie A to win the race for Alejo Veliz’s signature.
Veliz is seen as one of the most exciting young attacking prospects in Argentine football, with the teenager finding the back of the net 11 times in 23 league appearances for Rosario Central this season prior to his move to the Lilywhites in the summer.
Various sources reported at the time that Spurs saw off competition from several European sides to land the centre-forward this summer (Fabrizio Romano – Here We Go Podcast).
Tottenham won a busy race for Alejo Veliz
The same information has now been confirmed by The Athletic, who state that Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Roma and AC Milan were all keen on landing the 20-year-old in January.
However, it is explained that Spurs moved swiftly to secure Veliz’s signature ahead of those aforementioned clubs for a deal worth £13m.
The report adds that Fabio Paratici was involved in the signing of the Argentine and that there is hope at the North London club that the youngster could prove as good an acquisition as the likes of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr have.

The fact that Postecoglou has already handed Veliz a couple of first-team opportunities despite the striker only beginning full training last month, suggests that the Australian and his coaching staff have been quite impressed with what they have seen from the 20-year-old on the training field.
