Tottenham are looking at midfielder Mikel Merino

It is explained that the club view the central midfielder area as being a crucial one to strengthen, particularly since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso could leave.

Fichajes allege that Tottenham have identified Merino as a potential target, with the midfielder standing out among the various profiles they have studied.

It is said that the 27-year-old is viewed as an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system, owing to his ability to recover balls, his vision of and the quality of his distribution, with the North London club said to view him as a ‘complete midfielder’.

The publication reveals that Merino’s current release clause stands at €60m (£51.6m) and that Sociedad are attempting to tie him down to a new contract.

Finally, the report adds that while Tottenham see the Spain international’s availability as a ‘golden opportunity’, the Lilywhites are likely to face ‘intense’ competition for his services.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Hojbjerg will leave in January, with the Dane seemingly being keen to do so during the summer. However, whether or not Spurs prioritise signing another midfielder could depend on Bentancur’s recovery and how well the Uruguayan does when he returns.
