Tottenham Hotspur recorded a much-needed and very late 1-0 win against Watford on New Year’s Day, with Davinson Sanchez nodding home in the 96th minute.
Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:
Hugo Lloris – 8 – Pretty much a spectator in the first half. One huge save to keep Spurs level in the second from a Josh King shot and came off his line to stop Pedro. Great stuff.
Emerson Royal – 5 – He was in acres from start to finish and must have had 10-15 crosses opportunities in the first 45 alone. However, he barely found a Spurs player. Unfortunately, this didn’t exactly improve in the second half.
Davinson Sanchez – 8.5 – With Emerson pushed so high up the pitch, Sanchez covered the space in behind well to stop counters and win the ball back quickly. Not content with that alone, he popped up for the 96th-minute winner!
Eric Dier – 7 – He tried his best to bring the ball out, but there was a distinct lack of movement up front and no space in behind for long balls. Not much defending for him to do.
Ben Davies – 7 – With all the play coming down the right, Davies didn’t get to underlap as much as usual today. However, when he did get rare chances to burst forward, Spurs looked more dangerous.
Sergio Reguilon – 6 – All the play came down the right side in the first half. Reggy had one good shot from the edge of the box that was well saved. In the second half, Reguilon was really wasteful in behind on the left.
Oliver Skipp – 7.5 – Played very well. Mopped up in front of the back four and won the ball back high up the pitch to make Spurs possession relentless.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7.5 – Much like Skipp, he was winning the ball back for fun in great areas to keep Watford under pressure. Did his job well, even if others did not.
Lucas Moura – 7.5 – The only one trying to make things happen. Arguably played right-wing-back better than Emerson at times in the first 45. Fantastic cross to give Son a great chance in the second half, which should have been a goal.
Heung-min Son – 7 – Really struggled in the number ten pocket against a low block again. Couldn’t get involved in the game too much. Should have scored in the second half. Have to give him credit for an excellent late assist though. Much better off the left.
Harry Kane – 7 – Had one really good chance in the first half but put it wide. A couple of decent shots from range, but he was feeding off scraps today.
Substitutes:
Harry Winks – 6 – A strange sub at a strange time of the game. Didn’t make any difference apart from fresh legs and a great late slide tackle.
Giovani Lo Celso – N/A
Bryan Gil – N/A
