Alfie Devine has fired England’s Under-20s to the round of sixteen stage of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a goal and an assist against Uruguay.

England took the lead with just 20 minutes on the clock as Alfie Devine‘s floated corner into the far post was met with authority by Bashir Humphreys.

The midfielder himself then doubled the lead at the start of the second half after Spurs’ Dane Scarlett won the long ball from goalkeeper Matthew Cox before Mateo Joseph played a through ball to Devine, who took a touch to get the ball out of his feet before finding the far corner with a tight angle.

Leeds midfielder Darko Gyabi sealed the win for England with a strike in added time before Uruguay got a consolation in the dying minutes of the game, making it 3-2.

Both Devine and Scarlett played almost the entire game, before being taken off in injury time and the pair might now be rested for Sunday’s group clash against Iraq, with the Young Lions already through to the next round.

Scarlett also scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Tunisia in the opening match of the tournament.

Spurs Web Opinion

Playing in a tournament like this is fantastic for the development of both Scarlett and Devine, who have a decent chance of going all the way and getting their hands on the trophy, given how impressive England have looked in their first two matches.
