Journalist Paul Brown believes that Ange Postecoglou will experiment with Brennan Johnson by playing him across the frontline over the coming weeks.
Johnson has primarily played in the wide areas or as a forward under Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest but he has regularly featured as a number nine in the Wales national set-up.
Given the 22-year-old’s versatility, there has been a lot said and written over the last couple of weeks regarding which position the youngster will play in the current Tottenham team.
With Spurs not signing an out-and-out number nine to replace Harry Kane this summer, some pundits, such as club legend Michael Dawson, have said that Johnson could be used as the central striker (Sky Sports News – 12:14 pm, September 2, 2023).
However, Alasdair Gold opined in a recent Q&A on Football.London that it is Dejan Kulusevski who is under the most immediate threat of losing his place in the starting lineup following the Forest academy graduate’s arrival.
Brennan Johnson will be used across the front three
When asked if Johnson is likely to play on the right for Spurs, Brown has now told GiveMeSport: “I think you might see him playing right across that forward line over the next few weeks, just while the manager experiments and tries to work out where he is best suited.
“Son did a great job up front in recent weeks, so it would be a surprise if Brennan Johnson suddenly jumped ahead of him to play as the striker. I think, if he gets into this team, it’s more likely in a wider area.
“But we’ll see because I think he can play as a centre forward-type. I think you might see him there in the future, but I doubt it’s going to be in the next game.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If Brennan Johnson does start against Sheffield United, I expect him to play off the left, with Son and Kulusevski both likely to keep their place in the starting eleven. However, that will be extremely harsh on Solomon, who picked up two assists against Burnley.
