After his starring role in Tottenham Hotspur’s dramatic win over Sheffield United lastweekend, it seems the tide of opinion is turning in Richarlison’s favour. Now, Rio Ferdinand has added his voice to the growing list of appraisals for the Brazilian attacker.

Things haven’t been easy for Richarlison since he joined Tottenham last summer. The former Everton man struggled for form last season and suffered some injury issues which hampered his progress.

By the end of the 2022/23 campaign, Richarlison had just three goals to his name for Spurs, with only one of those coming in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

Since the departure of Harry Kane, Richarlison has mostly been leading the line for Tottenham, but looked like he may lose his place to Heung-min Son after the South Korean bagged a hat-trick before the international break.

During that international break, Richarlison opened up about his mental health struggles and his desire to get psychiatric help upon his return to London (Globo Esporte).

The Brazilian star then returned to club duty and was integral to Spurs coming from behind late on to defeat Sheffield United at the weekend, contributing a goal and an assist deep in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 win.

Rio Ferdinand is happy for Richarlison

Speaking about Richarlison’s situation, and his recent display, Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for the Tottenham forward.

He told his YouTube channel: “I have to be honest, I rate him. I really like him, I love his energy. I felt for him the other day, with his comments that he wants to see a psychiatrist to help him handle the situation he’s in at the moment. But I just think no-one knows what’s going on behind the scenes and I hope he gets himself right.

“But I like him as a player. I remember speaking to Carlo Ancelotti about him when he had him at Everton and he said this kid will play for a top, top tier team; a Champions League team and he’ll be one of the best players around because he’s that good. [With] Harry Kane going, [Richarlison] could be the biggest benefactor of it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is great to see so many people now being supportive of Richarlison and praising his work in the last game, but it’s funny how quickly people change their mind. Earlier this season, and throughout the last campaign, Richarlison was being criticised so harshly. It just goes to show that one good performance can turn things around completely.
