It was a weekend to remember for Tottenham Hotspur and in particular, Richarlison. The Brazilian was instrumental in helping the Lilywhites fight back to win against Sheffield United, and has now been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League team of the week.
Richarlison has had his fair share of struggles since joining Tottenham last summer. Arriving with a £60m price tag was always going to invite pressure and his first season with the Lilywhites was far from spectacular.
The Brazilian managed just three goals last season, two in the first Champions League game, and his first Premier League goal didn’t come until April of this year (Transfermarkt).
This season, with Harry Kane leaving the club, there has been renewed pressure on Richarlison to lead the line. Despite starting the first three league games in the centre-forward role, Richarlison failed to score and was replaced by Heung-min Son.
Shearer puts Richarlison in his team of the week
After revealing his battle with mental health struggles last week (Globo Esporte), Richarlison bounced back in style at the weekend.
He came on as a substitute in the game against Sheffield United with Spurs trailing 1-0, but managed to score and provide an assist for Dejan Kulusevski deep in stoppage time to change the game.
The performance was enough to secure a spot in Alan Shearer’s Premier League team of the week, with the pundit saying this about Richarlison: “Changed the game. He was only on for 20 minutes but scored a fantastic header and then set up Kulusevski for the winner.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s brilliant to see Richarlison getting his flowers now, and hopefully he can carry this form into the next few games and really get his confidence back.
Once he gets in that flow, he will be such a dangerous player for us, and we desperately need as much attacking output as possible to make this system work.
