In quite an appalling column, Wednesday’s edition of Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) claimed that Richarlison was merely making excuses for his poor form by going public with his mental health struggles and that the Tottenham man deserves to be dropped from Brazil’s starting eleven.

Richarlison had a difficult start to the season for both club and country and the forward admitted to Globo Esporte during the international break that he has been dealing with difficult challenges in his personal life for which he plans to seek psychological help.

Ange Postecoglou subsequently said that the 26-year-old will get all the help he needs at the club (Sky Sports) while his Tottenham teammates have also got around him.

Son Heung-min admitted everyone at the club is over the moon for the former Everton man after his late header against the Blades (Football.London).

Sport make horrible claim about brave Richarlison

Richarlison will be hoping that his form starts to turn on the back of his goal and assist on Saturday, but Sport, for some reason, believe that the Spurs star was merely giving an ‘alibi’ for his poor form.

In a column discussing why Vitor Roque, who signed for the Catalan club in the summer before being loaned back to Athletico Paranaense, needs to start ahead of the 26-year-old, the outlet does not hold back on their criticism of the Selecao’s number nine.

They write: “Richarlison, who started both games [for Brazil], came out crying in the first, as a result of frustration; and, in the second, he said in a mixed zone that he would go seek psychological help to work on his anxiety. He stated that he had off-field problems (which sounded like an alibi and a public distraction due to his poor performance).”

Spurs Web Opinion

This is completely tone-deaf and quite an appalling thing to say in 2023, given all the progress we have made in our conversations surrounding this topic.

It is because of comments and responses like this that footballers (and many top sportsmen) are hesitant to go public with their mental health struggles.
