Richarlison insists the only big change at Tottenham from last season has been the new philosophy that Ange Postecoglou has brought with him.
Going into last season, many expected Spurs to push on and potentially challenge the big guns on the back of their impressive finish to the 2020-21 season under Antonio Conte.
However, the Lilywhites crumbled in the second half of last season, with Conte even publicly remarking that the Tottenham players were incapable of handling pressure (The Athletic).
The expectations in N17 were quite low coming into this season, with many expecting it to be a transitional campaign under Ange Postecoglou.
However, Spurs have started exceptionally and there appears to be a togetherness and comradery among the players which was missing for large parts of last season.
Richarlison hints at major change coming from Ange
Richarlison has rejected the idea that there has been a change in mentality, insisting that the only thing that is different is the ideas that Postecoglou has brought with him.
When asked whether it’s a surprise that Tottenham are competing to be on top of the table, the striker told ESPN Brasil (as translated by Sport Witness): “I don’t think so, because the coach came with a very good philosophy and we, the players, bought his idea.
“So I think his style of playing favours us as players. I think we’ve been doing a great job. I believe that almost nothing has changed about players from last year. Only the philosophy really changed and we bought his ideas.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that the personnel changes have made a big difference, with the likes of Udogie, Van de Ven, Maddison and Vicario hitting the ground running.
Having said that, our squad last season was nowhere near as bad as Conte made it look, with the Italian conveniently shifting the blame onto the players when his tactics were not working.
