Conor Gallagher has seemingly ruled out a late move to Tottenham by insisting that he remains focused on doing well for Chelsea after captaining the club to a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Gallagher has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham all summer ( Telegraph) but some outlets over the last few weeks have indicated that Chelsea wish to hang on to the 23-year-old (Daily Mail).
On Wednesday afternoon, The Times reported that Spurs had been offered a late opportunity to sign the England international as Chelsea had put him up for sale after the arrivals of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Stamford Bridge.
The outlet suggested that the Lilywhites are likely to make a late move for the midfielder if they manage to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Conor Gallagher now hints at a Chelsea stay
However, Mauricio Pochettino seemingly sent a clear message about Gallagher’s future by offering the midfielder the captain’s armband for the Carabao Cup clash against Wimbledon.
Following the win, the Blues Academy graduate made it clear that he wants to continue doing well for the West London club.
Gallagher said (via The Metro): “I don’t want to stop, I want to keep improving, keep helping the club. It was a great moment tonight [captaining the team] and hopefully many more.
“Everyone’s playing well, obviously a lot of top midfielders [have joined the club], but I’m just playing with quite a lot of confidence at the minute, I feel fit and strong.
“It’s great to have a great squad that we have for this season, it’s really important to help us win games. I’m happy with how it’s going so far for myself, I want to keep improving and keep helping the team get more wins.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With Gallagher now looking set to stay at Chelsea, it remains unclear which midfielder Spurs will target if Hojbjerg completes a move to Atletico Madrid. I doubt Postecoglou would want to let the Dane leave this late in the window without having a replacement lined up.
