Football Insider have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur failed with a deadline-day move for Conor Gallagher since they were unable to meet Chelsea’s valuation of the midfielder.
It was widely reported leading up to deadline day that Spurs were planning to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and make a late move to sign Gallagher (The Times).
The Guardian even asserted last Thursday evening that, amidst Tottenham’s late interest, there was a ‘strong chance’ that the 23-year-old would leave Stamford Bridge before the window slammed shut.
However, Gallagher stayed put at Chelsea while Spurs were also unable to offload Hojbjerg before the 11 pm deadline.

Tottenham’s offer for Gallagher fell short
Football Insider have claimed that despite not being able to move on the Dane, the Lilywhites submitted a £40m deadline-day offer for the Chelsea star.
It is alleged that Spurs were on the trail of the England international all summer and even held extensive talks with their London rivals regarding the player.
However, it is explained that they simply could not agree on a deal with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, who valued Gallagher at £45m.

I highly doubt it was the £5m difference in valuation that prevented Tottenham from signing Gallagher.
While Spurs’ inability to offload Hojbjerg might have been a factor, Pochettino might have also been reluctant to let the 23-year-old leave, with the midfielder starting all four league games so far this season.
