Ben Davies has revealed that the Tottenham players have been on Oliver Skipp’s case in training for his shooting and admitted that he was delighted to see the youngster’s strike hit the back of the net against Chelsea.
Skipp has shown plenty of promising attributes since breaking into the Spurs side, including his tenacity, engine and defensive awareness.
However, the midfielder’s shooting is evidently not one of his strengths, with the youngster not having found the back of the net in 66 appearances leading up to the London derby on Sunday.
You would have certainly not guessed that from the way Skipp took his goal against Chelsea as the midfielder raced on to the loose ball and struck a powerful half-volley from the edge of the box which Kepa Arrizabalaga could not keep out despite getting a hand on it.
Davies suggested that the 22-year-old saw the benefits of all the shooting practice he has done in training.
When asked about Skipp’s strike, the Welshman told Tottenham’s official website: “We couldn’t have been happier. It’s so well deserved.
“It was an amazing strike. We’ve been on him in training when he’s had a few, but when he was lining this one up, all the practice he’s had has finally come right.
“I thought he played brilliantly, broke up everything. It was thoroughly deserved and everyone is delighted for him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The intent Skipp showed to race on to Enzo Fernandez’s clearance ahead of Joao Felix, who was clearly the favourite to get there first, was impressive.
Once he got the first touch right and the ball broke kindly, the midfielder certainly did not have any second thoughts about hitting it on the half-volley.
