Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed through their official website that they have taken up the option to extend Jan Vertonghen’s contract for one more year, which will take it to 2020.

The 31-year-old defender, who singed back in 2012 under then Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is into his seventh season as a Tottenham player and has been one of Tottenham’s best defenders in the Premier League era. If Vertonghen’s form in recent seasons is anything to go by, the former Ajax man is actually getting better with age, and the contract extension is certainly a fitting reward for his recent performances.

Vertonghen who picked up a thigh injury during Spurs draw at the Camp Nou against Barcelona is not expected to return to training until January, but Spurs fans certainly rejoiced on hearing about the news of his contract extension.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the news on social media:

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Vertonghen said last week that he feels he still has 5 years left in him. He said, ” The way I feel now, I’ve got at least four to five good years left in the tank.

“At the moment I feel great at Tottenham. It’s a club with unbelievable potential — not just the players but everything around it. Everyone wants to be part of it.”

While it remains to be seen if he can last that long at the top level, he is certainly not far from done just yet.
