Gazzetta dello Sport have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have to raise the stakes if they wish to sign Cristian Romero after Atalanta rejected the North London club’s latest offer of €50m (£42.8m) including bonuses for the defender.
Negotiations for the Argentine international are seemingly not proving straightforward, with some sources claiming over recent days that the North Londoners saw their opening offer of €45m (£38.4m) being turned down by the Bergamo club.
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold provided some optimism for Spurs fans by reporting on Saturday that Daniel Levy had given the green light for the deal for Romero to be completed. The journalist claimed that the fee is expected to be in the region of £38.5m.
However, Gazzetta dello Sport have now claimed that Tottenham have to ‘up the ante’ to sign Romero after seeing their latest offer rejected.
It was asserted that the bid from the Lilywhites was worth ‘€40m plus €10m in easy bonuses’.
Atalanta have allegedly informed Spurs that they have to pay ‘€55m immediately’ (£47m) if they wish to sign the 23-year-old this summer.

It is unclear what Gazzetta mean when they say that Atalanta want €55m ‘immediately’. I doubt they are demanding the entire money upfront as that rarely tends to happen in modern-day transfers. I suspect they mean that the Serie A club want the amount guaranteed instead of bonus payments.
