The latest Mundo Deportivo column suggests that Barcelona’s decision to not sign Cristian Romero back in 2021 was one of the worst that the club’s hierarchy has made over recent years.
Romero was one of several Tottenham stars who underperformed under Antonio Conte last season, with the centre-back coming in for plenty of criticism.
However, the 25-year-old has started the new season in fantastic form and has been much more like the player we saw during his first season at the North London club.
The centre-back seems to be growing with the additional leadership responsibility after Ange Postecoglou appointed him as the club’s vice-captain.
Romero took his form to the international scene, starting for Argentina in their two wins over Ecuador and Bolivia, with outlets from the South American country suggesting that the Tottenham man is now among the best in the world in his position (TyC Sports).
Barca passed up on Cristian Romero back in 2021
Mundo Deportivo have now revealed that the former Juventus man was recommended to Barcelona by Lionel Messi ahead of the centre-back’s switch to Spurs in 2021.
The publication alleges that Messi’s father mentioned to the Catalan club’s form president Joan Laporta that the La Liga giants need Romero.
However, it is explained that not only did Laporta not listen to that advice but he also allowed Messi to join Paris Saint-Germain, with the outlet stating that those decisions were the worst that the club have made in their recent history.
Spurs Web Opinion
Romero is one of a whole host of impressive acquisitions that Paratici made during his time at the club.
If Ange does go on to have success this season or in the years to come, there is no doubt that the Italian would have had a huge hand in it, given the amount of top talent he has brought to Hotspur Way.
