Former Argentina midfielder Jorge Burruchaga has said that Cristian Romero is ten times the player that Virgil van Dijk is.

Romero has continued his impressive start to the season during the international break, delivering two solid displays for Argentina in their wins over Ecuador and Bolivia.

The Tottenham man has established himself as the leader of the Albiceleste backline over the last few years, playing crucial roles in their Copa America and World Cup wins.

The 25-year-old has been praised to high heavens by those in the Argentine set-up over the last few days, with Lionel Messi describing him best central defender in the world, with the comments also backed up by midfielder Rodrigo de Paul (Mirror).

This sentiment was echoed by Chelsea‘s Enzo Fernandez in his comment on Romero’s Instagram post, while Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni likened the centre-back to ‘He-Man’ (D-Sports).

Is Cristian Romero ten times better than Van Dijk?

The Tottenham man is continuing to be lavished with praise in his country, with Burruchaga being the latest to join the bandwagon.

The 60-year-old, who was part of Argentina’s 1986 World Cup winning side, told Radio La Red (as relayed by Varsky Sports): “They say Van Dijk and tell me he is the best defender in the world. Romero is 10 times more. If you look at the best defenders, they are not fast. And Cuti has balance and speed. He’s extraordinary.”

All these comments are great for Romero’s confidence and are a reflection of how well he has done for Argentina over the last three years.

However, the 25-year-old cannot be included in the same conversation as the likes of Van Dijk and Ruben Dias unless he performs consistently for Tottenham for a couple of years.
