Speaking to the press this afternoon, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been discussing the fitness status of various members of his squad. One player in particular, Bryan Gil, is someone Postecoglou can’t wait to have available for selection.
Bryan Gil has not had an easy time of it since joining Tottenham back in 2021. The young Spaniard has struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot in North London, and has had to make do with a couple of loan spells over the last year.
With opportunities hard to come by under Antonio Conte, Gil spent time back in Spain with both Valencia and his former club, Sevilla. The winger did his reputation a world of good out there, too, and could have ended up moving to Spain permanently this summer (Corriere dello Sport 02/06/23 as relayed by Sport Witness).
Ultimately, after suffering from a back injury for a while, Gil took the decision to undergo surgery this summer, thus ending any chances of a move away from Spurs.
Gil could fit into Postecoglou’s Spurs system
That may well be a blessing in disguise, if Ange Postecoglou‘s latest words are anything to go by. In a press conference today (via Football.London), the Spurs boss has been discussing the merits of having Gil back to full fitness soon, especially given the recent injury to Ivan Perisic.
He said: “He’s been a bit unfortunate in that, pretty much since the start of pre-season, he’s had a couple of injuries that haven’t allowed him to train with the team. He had a good year last year away from here and he certainly plays in a position where guys with his attributes can fit into our structure.
“It’ll be good to see Bryan getting up to speed over the next couple of weeks, training with the team and then, obviously with Ivan going down, we’re one down in those wide areas so having him at the club is certainly beneficial.”

If it wasn’t for that injury and surgery, I reckon Gil would have left the club this summer. But, it could all work out nicely now, especially if he can come into the team and perform how we know he can. Postecoglou will know how to utilise him, and he could be like a new signing for us.
