Phil Neville has been discussing the great work Ange Postecoglou has done since taking over at Tottenham, and explained why some people may have doubted the Australian when he first joined the club.
It’s safe to say that Ange Postecoglou wasn’t exactly anyone’s top choice when it came to filling the vacant Tottenham managerial role this summer.
But, any of those doubts have been eradicated thanks to the manner in which the 58-year-old has transformed the fortunes of the North London club in such a short space of time.
The Lilywhites are currently unbeaten in the first eight games of the Premier League campaign, with six wins and two draws. Spurs even went into the international break at the top of the table, and have a chance to return there if they beat Fulham tonight.
It’s early days, but some have even mentioned Tottenham as potential title contenders for the season.
Ange Postecoglou deserves more respect at Spurs
Speaking to NBC Sports, Phil Neville admitted he isn’t sure Spurs can seal a spot in the top four this season, but did insist that Postecoglou should have been given more respect when he was hired as the new manager at Tottenham.
He said: “I love him. I think he’s been a breath of fresh air, someone who just looks totally authentic… But I don’t think they’re quite there yet.
“I think they’ve had a good start, they’ve got a little bit of momentum, good feeling. I think the jury’s still out, for me, whether they can reach the top four.
“I go back to what I said about David Moyes and Unai Emery… it’s because it’s not a fashionable name.
“[Postecoglou has] been coaching at the top level for a long time, at national level, at Celtic and around the world. And just because he’s not fashionable, people underestimate the quality of these type of guys.
“If there was someone that you’d want to sit down and talk to at this moment in time, I’d say I want to go and have a beer with him because I think he’d give you so many lessons in how to deal with people, react to people.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t sure about Postecoglou being given the job this summer, and that was entirely because he had never been given an opportunity at the top level. But, you can’t prove anything until you’re given a chance, and he’s making the most of that chance now.
