Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has said that he would not be surprised if Aston Villa make a late move to sign Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur.
The speculation over Dier’s future has intensified since the centre-back was left out of Tottenham’s matchday squad against Brentford by Ange Postecoglou.
It was reported by 90 min on Tuesday that teams have been alerted that the 29-year-old could be available at a cut-price fee, with the defender said to be attracting interest from the likes of Crystal Palace, Moncao, Celtic, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and several other clubs.
Football Insider subsequently suggested on Wednesday that Dier’s future could depend on the potential incomings at Tottenham, claiming that the defender could decide to leave if he is pushed further down the pecking order by the arrival of new defensive reinforcements.
Aston Villa could take a look at Eric Dier
Bailey believes that following the knee injury sustained by Tyrone Mings, which is expected to keep the 30-year-old out of action for a lengthy period (Daily Mail), Villa could turn to Dier as a potential replacement.
The journalist said on the Talking Transfers Podcast: “In terms of Mings, I think they will go into the central defender market now, maybe a loan somewhere.
“I was thinking there, maybe Eric Dier could be an option there, It wouldn’t surprise me. Villa were looking at Aymeric Laporte before Pau Torres. Do they go down that route again? For Laporte or even Dier.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that Spurs will receive some late offers for Dier, and the North London club will likely be open to selling, given that the centre-back has just one year left on his contract.
The question is whether the 29-year-old would be open to leaving. I can see him wanting to stay and fight for his place.
