Mauricio Pochettino hailed a “fantastic” hat-trick of victories after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Brighton at Wembley.
A goal in each half was enough to see us jump up the table from seventh to fourth – and of course above our North London rivals Arsenal.
The article on Eirsport.ie adds that last nights victory followed wins against Apoel Nicosia and Stoke City but say however this was not vintage Spurs and even though we dominated throughout, it took us till near the end to eventually kill off their South Coast opponents.
It adds that we of course travel to league leaders Manchester City on Saturday, a massive 18 points behind our opponents however it does say Mauricio Pochettino hopes the momentum gained from the victories can help us end City’s record 16-game league winning streak and begin to close the gap.
Pochettino said: “I think it’s fantastic for us, three victories in a row, that was so important for us. I’m happy with the performance.
“The team deserved it, we dominated the game. We deserved to go to half time winning the game, [the win was important to] believe and fight for the Premier League.
He added: “We created a lot of chances, it’s not easy to play when the opponent play in that formation to try only to stop you to play.”
The article adds how Brighton had frustrated us for long periods and were unfortunate not to go in at the break on level terms when a Serge Aurier cross from the touchline sailed over Matt Ryan’s head into the far corner of the net for the Ivorian’s first goal for the club.
It says in truth we should have wrapped up the points with a bit more to spare with Ryan saving a Harry Kane effort before Heung-Min Son was denied by an offside flag. Erik Lamela then saw a deflected effort come back off the post in his first start in 13 months. Kane then went close with a rasping free-kick that also hit the post from 20 yards.
It adds that with three minutes remaining Son ghosted in at the back post to head home a Christian Eriksen floated cross for his fourth goal in four games.
It adds that Pochettino was asked if Aurier’s opener was a fluke, to which Pochettino added: “I think he tried to put the ball in there and I think it’s fantastic, sometimes you need some luck to score.”
