Over the last two seasons, Tottenham Hotspur have amassed the most points, scored the most goals and conceded the fewest, yet have no silverware to show for it.
Twice in succession, Spurs were chasing down top-spot, only to be left congratulating their rivals come the end of the season.
While applying the pressure to both Leicester City in 2016 and Chelsea in April and May, Tottenham’s form had been incredible, but ultimately not enough to claim a title on either occasion.
It can be argued that Tottenham’s slow starts to the season have cost them on both counts, having dropped valuable points earlier in their campaigns, that’s eventually gone on to cost Spurs the title twice in a row.
Full-back Ben Davies is aware of the problem and claims the team wants to avoid a repeat of the same mistakes. In an interview posted on Tottenham Hotspur’s official club website, Davies had this to say:
“We don’t want to come back in and have a slow start to the season – we want to come in raring to go and pick up as many points as we can early-doors. A good pre-season will help us to do that.”
Davies is of course referring to the International Champions Cup in July, in which Spurs will face PSG, Roma and Manchester City.
The 24 year old believes that the pre-season tournament in America is the perfect platform for building momentum ahead of the new season.
“We’ve got some good fixtures out there,” He added. “and it’s up to us to keep ourselves fit and get fully ready for them.”
Davies also gave insight into the squad’s mentality after such a successful, yet ironically fruitless campaign last season. He said:
“We’re really determined to win games and I think the way we go into every single match, we don’t have any fear, whoever we’re against.”
“Even if our backs are against the wall, we’ve turned games around and performed well in those matches and it’s the sign of a good side when you can pick up points when sometimes you don’t play so well.”
“I think we’ve done that in a couple of games over the last year and it’s important that we’re fully focused at all times again next season.”
Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing these lot play again, even if it is just a friendly. There’s so much character in every performance.
This Tottenham team has got me looking forward to watching us play again. Who here remembers when AVB and Tim Sherwood were gaffer?
…I used to dread our games…
