TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR face competition from Aston Villa to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.
Boro value Downing at £12million, despite their relegation to the Championship. The England international is still recovering from surgery on his foot which he injured in May, and was told by a specialist that he could be back as early as October.
Spurs have been trying to sign the 24-year-old since 2006, but may have to sell before they can make a formal offer for Downing.
