Stewart Robson has said that Eric Dier is not the player AS Roma should turn to if they are looking for a solid defender who can read danger quickly.
Dier is seemingly not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans at the moment, with the centre-back not having played a single minute of football so far this season.
While some sources have suggested that the defender would want to leave on a free transfer next summer (Alasdair Gold – Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham), there seems to be no shortage of interest in his services ahead of January.
On October 9, The Times reported that Sporting Lisbon are exploring re-signing the Tottenham man, explaining that the Portuguese club’s president Frederico Varandas has a good relationship with the England international.
Over recent days, there has been plenty of speculation linking Dier with a move to Roma, with Tuttosport (14/10/23 via Corriere Giallo Rosso have) suggesting a few days ago that the 29-year-old is Jose Mourinho’s number top centre-back target.
Eric Dier can play out from the back effectively
However, Robson is not convinced that the Spurs star would be the right fit for the Giallorossi.
When asked about the Serie A side’s interest in Dier, the former Arsenal midfielder told The Gab & Juls Show on ESPN: “What do you want? Do you want someone who is quite good on the ball and can play passes into the front players or a good defender?
“If you want a good defender I would say don’t get Eric Dier, he’s not quick enough, he doesn’t read danger quickly enough, he’s a liability, if you want someone who will just play out from the back, you might want him, but I would say no, I’m not an Eric Dier fan at the moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Jose Mourinho would know Dier’s strengths and weaknesses well, having worked with him for a year and a half at Spurs. The 29-year-old is nowhere near as bad as some Tottenham fans think he is and I believe that he could excel in the Italian top-flight.
