Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has given the green light for the club to move for Cristian Romero, according to Football.London.

The report claims that Tottenham are already in advanced negotiations with Atalanta, who the North Londoners have been also in discussions with following the completion of Pierluigi Gollini’s loan deal.

It is said that Romero will cost around £38.5m, with the Serie A defender of the year keen to make the move to Tottenham.

The Argentine international is midway through a two-year loan from Juventus, with Atalanta having the option to make the deal permanent for €16m (£13.8m), where they will make a healthy profit from his sale.

Tottenham have already sold Juan Foyth earlier in the window when he completed his switch to Villarreal for £13m and Toby Alderweireld looks set to follow him out of the door for a similar fee, with the Belgian expected in Qatar this afternoon ahead of a move to Al-Duhail.

Romero is exactly what the Spurs defence has been missing over the last 18 months.  Despite the fact he is relatively young at 23, he proved last year in the Italian top flight that he is already an established central defender.
