Steffen Freund has claimed that Daniel Levy ‘laughed himself to death’ when Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeness made his statement about Harry Kane.

Bayern courted Harry Kane very publicly throughout the summer transfer window, with reports indicating that the Spurs hierarchy, including Levy, were not happy with some of the statements that were coming out of the Bavarian club (Bild).

Hoeness even claimed last month that Tottenham would have to eventually ‘give up’ and soften their stance regarding the England captain (Sport 1 via Sky Sports).

However, in the end, Spurs ended up getting a premium for the 30-year-old despite the fact that he only had a year left to run on his contract at the North London club.

According to some outlets, including Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, the fee could rise to as much as £120m if certain add-ons are met.

Levy would have loved Bayern’s Kane desperation

Freund, who made over 100 appearances for Spurs as a player, and served as assistant coach at White Hart Lane under Andre Villas-Boas, insisted that Levy would have been amused by Hoeness’ statement and that the Tottenham chairman was never going to soften his stance.

The German said Ran.de: “The interview by Uli Hoeness, Levy laughed himself to death. That didn’t bother him very much. I’m sure in the end he got the prize he wanted and Bayern had to give in.”

It was clear from the manner in which the Kane saga played out that Levy made Bayern sweat until the last moment and forced them to pay up what he wanted.

That was not only intended as a message to the Bundesliga giants but also perhaps meant as a warning shot by Levy to deter any other club from making a move for players who Tottenham do not want to sell in the future.
