The Daily Mail have revealed that new Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou is in favour of the club’s move for Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario has come from nowhere to establish himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the Serie A since his move to Empoli two years ago.

He is one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the Italian top flight, with 90 min reporting on Tuesday that Spurs face competition from the likes of Inter Milan, AS Roma, Juventus and Fiorentina for the 26-year-old’s services.

Postecoglou happy with Guglielmo Vicario deal

However, it now appears as if Tottenham have made significant progress in the deal to sign Vicario, with Fabrizio Romano taking to social media this morning to reveal that the negotiations between the Premier League side and Empoli are at the ‘final stages’.

The journalist revealed that the Lilywhites are now expected to submit a offer of €19m (£16.3m) for the goalkeeper, having already agreed on the terms of a five-year deal with him.

If The Mail’s latest update is to be believed, it appears Postecoglou is a fan of Vicario. The publication claims that the Australian is ‘eager’ for Tottenham to finalise a deal for the Empoli shot stopper.

Current Tottenham number one Hugo Lloris recently spoke of his interest to leave the club this summer to seek a new challenge.

The French World Cup winner told Nice-Matin: “We have reached an important moment, whether it be for the club or me. It’s the end of an era.

“I have a desire for something else. I will carefully study what is possible. However, I haven’t forgotten that I have a year left on my contract at Tottenham, and in football, it’s always hard to predict what will happen.”

The swiftness with which Spurs have made this move suggests that Postecoglou has made it clear to the club that he wants a goalkeeper to arrive through the door before pre-season training begins.

While one can understand why Tottenham might have preferred Raya, given his Premier League experience and homegrown status, it appears like the Lilywhites are getting another top, young goalkeeper.
